FCPX - Editor Pow Wow
UPDATE: - The “Pow Wow” ran for about 2.5 hours. From where I sat it was a total success. I never thought there would be as much interest as there seemed to be. I think we had up to 58 viewers at one point and the only reason I did the webcast thing was that a couple of buddies of mine in Oregon and NYC wanted to watch in.
Planetmitch complained a bit about us being too whiney and I won’t argue with him there. We will do this again in a few weeks and I will actually program and plan some stuff. Today was a very freeform discussion and one of the participants, Steve Navrat, had just returned from vacation and hadn’t seen the application at all.
I want to thank all the people for following me today and we’ll keep you up to date for the next broadcast.

OK, I’m trying something totally new here.
I really like getting together with other editors to discuss technique and work flow and with the release of FCPX, I’ve had a lot of friends contact me and ask questions and frankly, I’ve spent a lot of unbillable time this week on the phone… but i’m not complaining its been fun.
This Saturday at Noon I’m doing something completely different. I’m going to have a few editors gather together at the facility I work at in Oakland California, and we are gonna huddle arround a big 46 monitor, (I think FCPX will run at 1920x1080) and we are going to have a full fledged geek session going over the new Final Cut Pro X.
The point is not to defend it, so if you are offended by someone dissing Apple be warned, but also, the point is not to shoot it down so if you can’t look at things objectively you may not want to participate.
I’ve had a couple buddies from across the country ask if they could follow along on Facetime or Skype and I think I’m going to try to make that happen. I’m setting up a ustream channel to do this and I want to invite anyone else who wants to watch to join in. This will be the farthest thing from a Pro broadcast, really just a bunch of guys sitting around messing with new software.
Watch this page for details. I hope to see you there.

Chris, thank you for doing the webcast today.
The fact that nearly 50+ years of editing know-how in that room can't figure out how to put build a 2-layer timeline w/a dissolve and some keyframes tells me that FCPX is simply not a reliable editing solution at the moment. For an app that bills itself as easy to use it looks very convoluted and needlessly fussy to me- esp. w/the keyboard shortcuts.
Keep up the good work, though, if you do this again in a month I'll be watching. Thx again.
Chris,
The Pow Wow was entertaining. It was a little frustrating because I couldn't communicate with you on some obvious things like the transition problem.
Something like this would be infinitely more helpful once more people get to know the program. We're all pretty ignorant at the moment.
BTW, I am a "pro", but not at editing. I was jceeetle in the chat.

Thanks for the broadcast.. I am a pro editor..Who edits every day with FCP.. who has not purchased FCP X yet.. but hearing you guys talk confirmed most of what I have been hearing and reading.. And watching you stumble thru the interface was downright scary to me.. Thanks.. good to hear opinions of people who are in my tribe !!
Thx

The Pow Wow was MUCH APPRECIATED! I thought that the Editors Lounge meeting last night was going to stream live, but it didn't. I'm going to focus now on Premiere, but I know I'll still have to learn this new Final Cut.
I've trained on Media Composer but I had hoped that with this new version of Final Cut I could focus in on 2 programs...now nothing is settled...there are STILL only 24 hours in a day and bills to pay at the end of every month...What's $299 x 2 million?
The webcast was great. I was gasping along with you guys on the many "Why the HELL does it insist on doing it that way?" moments, of which there were far too many.
The whole UI is pretty but seems terribly inefficient to me -- dare I say that they've managed to come up with the Mother of All mode-switching interfaces?! Sheesh.
You guys were right -- at least this absolutely shows where Apple's head must be (since Apple won't just come out and tell anyone). Very revealing that your iMovie-experienced chatters kept invoking it and just couldn't quite see what the fuss was about.
Whichever of your guys observed that this doesn't seem comfortably targeted to either the broadcast/cable/film market OR current iMovie users was dead on!
If they had launched FCP X with some sort of explanation & roadmap -- i.e., here's why we've changed it dramatically, because we see such-and-such down the road, and next iterations will aim at this, etc. -- I think they wouldn't have provoked this overwhelming reaction from the broadcast/cable/film segment of the market. It's a new approach to editing, but to what clear user advantage?
Yes, let's do it again. I was kicking myself for not being in the room. Although, to be honest, I'm not sure I'll have any more experience with the app in a month. I'm not spending my own money on it, and my boss has read enough to know that it has no use in our four-editor-plus-AE facility. So he won't buy it for me just to noodle around on.
Hey, here's an idea. Maybe if Apple offered a free 30-day demo download (like Adobe and Avid), I could get up to speed on my own time. I'd probably be less annoyed with them if they extended that olive branch.
Anyway, I enjoyed the editorial jocularity as much as anything.
